Here’s What Fred Axelberd, president of Displayit,
Had to Say About the 3612 Conveyor Sewing Workstation from Cutsew

What’s your role at Displayit and how closely do you work with the sewing production?

"I’m one of the two owners. I’m the president of the company and I’m responsible for the production operations so that includes the sewing."

Can you start off by describing what your business does and why you needed a conveyor sewing workstation?

"We print large format graphics utilizing fabrics primarily for the media that's printed and then we sew the fabrics to fit onto large frames that are used for meetings and trade shows. And one of the functions that we do perform in sewing is silicone edge installation so that we can do a very clean looking display. The sewing table Cutsew designed with our team does that more efficiently than any other apparatus that we know of."

What’s the difference between the way your workers attach the plastic edging now and the way they used to do it?

"The traditional way is a sewing person at a sewing machine is hand feeding the silicone edge material and sewing it onto the fabric. The challenge is when you have these very large graphics. They're heavy; they're bulky and the operator has to bunch it up and manipulate it and it is very time consuming and it requires a very high level of skill. With the conveyor table, you place the large graphic on a table and you can spread it out and it takes a lesser skill level to perform the job, which is very important because not many American young people are signing up to learn how to be sewers."

How has your productivity or the quality of work improved since you’ve been using the conveyor sewing workstation from Cutsew?

"Most of our sewers who are doing that job are very good so the quality is very good, but with the conveyor table married with this serger, it can be done much faster, like maybe 5 to 7-8 times faster and as good. So you don't lose any quality, but you gain productivity and you can have a less experienced and skilled sewer do it. And that means we can train people who aren't traditional sewing machine operators to operate this."

How do your operators like this compared to the machinery they were using?

"The operators that actually use it – there’s only a couple – love it, because it makes the job so much easier. We don't even do this job by the old method anymore here."

So tell me, did you have any reservations before you purchased the equipment from Cutsew?

"No. I was totally confident that it was going to work."

How closely did you work with Cutsew to get the workstation customized to do what you needed it to do?

"Well, it was truly a cooperative and joint effort between the Cutsew technical people and the supervisor of our sewing department, who is also a sewing machine mechanic, and production person, so we knew exactly what we wanted. And between the Cutsew folks and our team, I think we got the perfect machine."

How many of the Cutsew conveyor sewing workstations did you purchase?

"We have one right now and we have another one on order. The second one will probably have a few little tweaks here and there."

So if another company who did large format graphics was thinking about buying this type of equipment from Cutsew, what would you tell them?

"Well if they’re direct competitors, I would probably tell them not to buy it. But in all fairness, if I was reviewing the equipment honestly to somebody, I would say 'If you have a need for this kind of application – if this fits your application—then by all means, I can’t imagine why you wouldn't buy it.'"

Are there any ways you can think of that the equipment or your experience with Cutsew could be improved?

"No, I think everything is just the way it should be. I would just add that from a people side, the Cutsew folks are really first-rate and just solid good people to do business with."
